Destiny went on sale yesterday morning at midnight in over 11,000 stores worldwide. This morning, Activision has come out to proudly announce that in just 24 hours, the new shooter from famed Halo makers Bungie has earned $500 million in revenue. Activision says this makes it the biggest new IP launch in history, but without official unit sales numbers, we don't know how it exactly stacks up to the other alleged title holder, Watch Dogs. Still, it would be a natural result of being the most pre-ordered game in history.
If that $500 million figure sounds familiar, that's because earlier this year it was reported that the combined costs of developing and marketing Destiny allegedly came to about $500 million, although that number was later refuted. But if true, that means Destiny has just made back all the money sunk into it in a single day. By the end of the week, Activision should be making a cool profit.
Though this may be the biggest new IP launch in history, Destiny still falls mightily short when you include all game releases. Rembember how Grand Theft Auto V made $800 million in a single day while Call of Duty: Ghosts made a whopping $1 billion? Coincidentally, Call of Duty is also an Activision project — the studio can lay claim to two world records now!
Destiny is currently available on PS4, PS3, Xbox One, and Xbx 360. If you purchased a digital copy of either last-gen version, you'll be able to upgrade to the current-gen versions for free until January 15, 2015.
