In the first Michael Bay Transformers film, an Xbox 360 receives power from the AllSpark and turns into a murderous machine. It was pretty stupid, not to mention par for the course when it comes to Bay's brand of heavy product placement. Know what isn't stupid cross promotion? A Megatron toy that accurately resembles his G1 form and can morph into a Sega Genesis!
Takara Tomy, the original creator of the Transformers, is celebrating 30 years of rolling out with a couple of figures that change into popular gaming consoles. First up is "Mega Drive Megatron," releasing this October in Japan for 10,000 yen (about $97). It even comes with a replica of the original Sonic the Hedgehog cartridge, which sadly doesn't also transform — I was hoping it would be a miniature soldier like Soundwave's cassettes! It won't be officially available in the US, but you can import it from several sites like HobbyLink Japan or AmiAmi, usually at a discounted price.
Following up on Megatron is an Optimus Prime toy that transforms into a PlayStation, but that figure doesn't have a release window just yet. Keep your ears open!
