Once upon a time, video games were developed and they were released and that was that. There might have been a few expansion packs which add fairly substantial content to the game but these tended to be spread out and worth the investment.
These days, we have day-one DLC, on-disc DLC, and DLC that even includes important story information. We don't know a whole lot about the next Star Wars: Battlefront but we can hope for a complete experience before EA and DICE start looking to expand the game.
It's also increasingly common for one of the platform holders to fork out for exclusive content while retailers also get their own little extras you won't find anywhere else.
Our partner YouTube channel Battlefield News! has put together a video looking at how DLC and exclusive content should be handled for the game.
The original Battlefront games were released without any DLC. Many have suggested that the Clone Wars could be added as a DLC but hopefully this would be done in such a way that you don't actually need to play it to fully appreciate the games' story. Another alternative is to release a Halo 4 Spec-Ops-like story.
Star Wars: Battlefront is targeted for release near Star Wars Episode VII's arrival in cinemas.
