Super Smash Bros 4 Weekly Round-Up: Daybreak, Xerneas, Dr Wily, And Someone New

August 8, 2014 by Ryan Parreno

Believe us, unless you played and understood Japanese Game Boy games, you don’t know the new guy.

The first week of August has brought with it a new batch of surprising reveals and details for Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS. Without further ado, let’s get straight to it.

On Monday, Sakurai goes out of left field with his reveal, this time bringing back into the spotlight the forgotten Game Boy game Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru, orThe Frog For Whom the Bell Tolls. The lead character from this game, the Prince of Sable, is an attack trophy, with the special ability to turn into a snake and frog. When he strikes, a dust cloud appears, from which you can still attack any enemies trapped within.

On Tuesday, Sakurai again surprised everyone with the reveal of the Daybreak, another buildable weapon straight out of Kid Icarus Uprising. You have to assemble it from three parts, and it will continue to fire while you move it forward and backward. Changing direction requires you move the Control Stick or Circle Pad to the back of the character you are using.

On Wednesday, we found out that Victini and Xerneas are both in the game as support Pokemon. Victini uses the move Victory Star, which adds power to whoever threw the Poke Ball, and it also prevents flinching. On the other hand, Xerneas uses Geomancy, which raises everyone’s launch power, but is super effective on whoever used the Poke Ball.

Yesterday, we got a peek at Dr Wily’s trophy, prone and surrendering and end ofMega Man 2 and everything. We also learned about the trophy gallery, which allows you to occasionally buy trophies on sale, using Play Coins of course. You can rotate the trophies on the 3DS version by drawing circles on the touch screen, and Sakurai promises this version alone will have more trophies than Super Smash Bros Brawl.

Finally, today Sakurai shared an out-of-context Game Boy screen. By this, I mean the original Game Boy, with the lime green LCD, and the surrounding grey façade that envelops it and the battery light on the left. The pic shows a Kirby and King Dedede under the Nintendo startup screen, which is fitting since Kirby got his start and had many of his best games on the system.

Super Smash Bros. 4 is coming to the 3DS October 7 and to the Wii U this holiday season.
