This was an eventful week for Super Smash Bros 4, wasn’t it? Today’s roundup goes through the new combatants and a few things besides.
On Monday, Sakurai, unveiled Rayman, as a trophy. He shared that Ubisoft were generous to give his team CG data to make it, but of course, some fans wonder if Ubi thought Rayman was going to be playable in the game at all.
On Tuesday, Sakurai shared Robin. Lucina, and Captain Falcon, the three newly announced entrants of the game. While he teased F-Zero fans about a future entry in the series, he also showed you can choose Robin in both genders, just like you could in Fire Emblem Awakening.
Sakurai also explained some aspects of Lucina gameplay, mainly, as the descendant of the Hero-King, she shares much of his moveset. Where they vary is how Marth’s hitbox is only found in the front of his sword, Lucina can hit enemies both in front and back of her weapon. She is also a little smaller than Marth. Sakurai elaborated that he found enough differentiation between Marth and Lucina to justify adding her in separately, compared to, say, the male and female Wii Fit Trainers. Sakurai also points out they added the Mark of Naga to Lucina’s left eye.
Lastly, Sakurai shared a small piece of Smash art from Yusuke Kozaki, who worked on Fire Emblem Awakening. As he points out, that character reveal video this week was from the same animation studio that did that game’s cutscenes, anima.
On Wednesday, Sakurai shared Robin’s two tools in dealing damage; the Levin sword and the tomes. The Levin sword can be controlled with Smash attacks, even to strike mid-air, but it breaks after some time, so while reloading (as it were) he or she uses the bronze sword. Robin also switches tomes to correspond with each special she uses. He shared a screenshot of one such tome special, Arcfire, which throws a bolt of flame down an opponent, only to break into a fire pillar.
Yesterday, Sakurai broke from the more serious recent posts, and revealed that Nintencats are coming with the Nintendogs to the Living Room stage, as well as the fact that there are five breeds of Nintendogs.
Finally, Sakurai shared a hilarious Screen KO shot. As you might imagine, these KO’s end with the characters breaking the fourth wall and squashing their faces on the game screen. The Team Rocket-like egresses from the stage, where players disappear into the sky, have now been dubbed Star KO’s. Interestingly, Sakurai states that when a match nears its time limit, the Star KOs will stop happening. So it seems the switch between Star and Screen KOs is based on the match clock.
Super Smash Bros 4 is coming to the 3DS October 7 and to the Wii U this holiday season.
