The player limited for Minecraft: Xbox One Edition has been set at eight, according to Microsoft Studios' Roger Carpenter.
Carpenter, a game producer, wrote:
#minecraftxbox1 will be 8 player at release but we will continue working to allow more players in a future update!

It has not yet been announced how players can take part in a game for the PS4 version of Minecraft but presumably the number is also eight. This represents no increase over the last-gen versions of Mojang's game and while Carpenter has said it might increase in future, it's not particularly impressive for new hardware.
A quicky search of the comments in reply to Carpenter's remarks and on YouTube is enough to show how disappointed players are with the news.
The PS4, PS Vita, and Xbox One editions of Minecraft are set to launch in August but developer 4J Studios has yet to reveal an exact date. However, the Scottish studio has hinted that the news might be revealed soon, writing on Twitter:
We can see the light at the end of the tunnel! #MinecraftXbox1 #MinecraftPS4 #MinecraftPSVita

While the player count isn't going anywhere, Minecraft on PS4 and Xbox One will feature game worlds 36 times larger than than the older console versions and 4J has demonstrated the improved render distance current-gen players can enjoy. The new versions will also display at 1080p and 60fps, meaning there should be a sizable graphics improvement.
We have several extended gameplay snippets as well as information on the new achievements which have been added for the PS4 and Xbox One edition here.
Last-gen console sales of Minecraft have already overtaken the PC and Mac versions and the Vita, PS4, and Xbox One editions will only boost that come August.
Players who own the game on PS3 or Xbox 360 will get a discount when they upgrade to the PS4 or Xbox One edition of the game and save files can transfer between the previous generation and the current one. Minecraft was announced for Xbox One at E3 last year and revealed for all of Sony's systems at gamescom.
