Report Suggests Ubisoft Restarted Development For Skull & Bones Again

May 25, 2021 by Dennis Patrick

Will Skull & Bones escape development hell?

Ubisoft is a huge video game company and chances are you’ve played more than a handful of video game titles from them over the years. It’s not surprising to see some games get scrapped or delayed from any size development studio much like Ubisoft, but it’s always a bit of a bummer to see a game you’ve been waiting on getting pushed back with no clear indication as to what’s going on behind closed doors. A game that I’ve personally been waiting on is Skull & Bones.

We don’t get too many pirate-themed video games so when Skull & Bones was first unveiled I was immediately on board, or at least ready to be boarded onto my very own pirate ship. However, things have not been smooth sailing for the developers behind Skull & Bones. Alright, I stop the puns now. Skull & Bones was first introduced to the general public back in 2017 during E3. It was a game that didn’t have too many details out for players to digest but we got the gist of what the studio was aiming for.

This was a pirate action-adventure game where players were mainly sailing the open seas and battling off other pirates, gaining alliances, while also plundering for loot or fleeing from the government ships. It had quite a bit of inspiration from Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag with the game centered around ship combat, but it was pushed back from its intended release of 2018 to 2019. There were talks of the game getting tweaked before it would release and while it got pushed into 2020, it wasn’t long ago that we found the game was now slated for 2022 to 2023.

Now a new report from Game Luster stated that their sources confirmed development scrapped their build and had to restart all over again. This comes with the recent removal of Ubisoft’s managing director Hugues Ricour who was working on Skull & Bones so there’s no telling just what’s been changed for this game if anything at all. Because this is a source and not an official comment made for the public, it’s tough to know if this rumor holds any truth or not.

Whatever the case might be, it’s going to be interesting to see if we get any word about Skull & Bones during E3 2021 or any Ubisoft-focused stream that takes place later on this year. In the meantime, we’ll have to wait and see if anything official happens to pop up regarding the game.
