A "huge proportion" of PlayStation 4 owners have never played The Last of Us, according to SCEE's product manager Josh Walker who said it would be "almost unfair" not to release the game on the console.
Speaking to MCV, Walker said:
"The Last of Us is considered one of the most significant titles of the last console generation, winning countless awards. It would be almost unfair for all our new fans to never play a game like this."
He added that Sony has looked at PlayStation Network data to determine how many players have not experienced Naughty Dog's title commenting that the numbers are "quite indicative of the shift in the market and the many players who have migrated from competitive platforms that we're glad to welcome to PlayStation."
Sony has previously revealed that almost a third of PS4 owners did not have a PS3.
Walker claimed Sony has been careful with its pricing policy for the gamein order to ensure those who have played the game on PS3 get value for their money second time round.
The Last of Us Remastered features all of the game's multiplayer DLC and the single player Left Behind expansion. The re-release boasts improved lighting, higher resolution character models, and improved textures at 1080p and 60fps.
When it was released last year, The Last of Us broke PS3 sales records, eventually selling six million copies, and a movie adaptation is in the works. The Last of Us Remastered is set for release on July 29th in North America and on August first in Europe.
