Kingdom Hearts 3: Co-Director Tai Yasue on Frozen, Marvel, And Star Wars

July 3, 2014 by Ryan Parreno

Yasue was also upfront about cutting material from Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix.

Kingdom Hearts director Tai Yasue was on hand to talk about all things Kingdom Hearts, and he had interesting things to say regarding Frozen, Marvel, and Star Wars. Before that, however, is a little something about Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix development.

He revealed, frankly and surprisingly, that they deliberately cut content from Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix to hasten development on Kingdom Hearts3. As you can see, Yasue’s statement is a confession that the devs were working on both games at the same time, and the time spent on Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix was cutting into development for Kingdom Hearts3. To be specific, there were between 70 to 80 people that worked on Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix. 35 of them were in charge of the cutscenes, five of them were programmers, and the rest included designers, sound staff, and others.

With that in mind, they decided not to make Re:coded a full game, add multiplayer in Mirage Arena, and include capes in Birth by Sleep. Regarding Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance, it was not in consideration of being added into this compilation at all. The reason for this is that the game was released far too recently to be considered.

Moving on to good news about Kingdom Hearts 3, Yasue had some interesting if generic things to add. Yes, he has seen Frozen (as much a box office hit in Japan as in the US), and has admitted he would like to add it, but made no indication that he can or that it would be added.

He also likes Star Wars and Marvel , now also Disney properties, but has no announcements to make at this time for those games either.

Finally, he thinks there is room to release another Kingdom Hearts game prior to Kingdom Hearts 3. While that indicates expected extended development time, it does open up the possibility of a new game hitting an older platform. Fans may salivate but I anticipate, if this ever come to pass, that it will more likely be a new 3DS title. After all, Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance itself was credited in helping with the 3DS’ turnaround.
