A former Thief dev has revealed exciting new projects on the way from his new studio, OtherSide Entertainment.
The name of the dev is Paul Neurath, and he intends to do reboots of classic video games. Neurath was last seen as creative director of Zynga Boston, but his career spans many PC classics, including System Shock 2, Thief 2: The Metal Age, and Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss. That last fact moves us forward to today.
Today, he starts anew with a reboot of Underworld, to be called Underworld Ascension. Paul professes Underworld had a transformative effect on him, changing the way he understood games, and also revealed that he actually bought the rights to the franchise.
Details are scarce on Underworld Ascension, mainly because they just started on it, but Paul revealed what his overarching objectives are with the game, and veterans should be satisfied.
OtherSide’s team won’t just be updating Underworld to modern RPG conventions, they intend to push new things with it as well. Having worked on many of the original games, Otherside will still make the game familiar enough to fans, keeping the elements that stood the test of time. Paul describes it as extending or evolving the original experience.
All Paul knows for sure for now is the game is hitting PC. No word on release dates and other platforms, but expect to hear that in due time.
