Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain and the Return of the Fulton System

June 12, 2014 by Stephen Daly

Ever want to strap a balloon to a sheep? Now you can (virtually, at least).

In our preview of Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, Lowell Bell discussed the Fulton system first introduced in Peace Walker.

Here's how it works:

"The demo showed us the return of the Fulton system seen in Peace Walker. Snake can strap a balloon on the back of any number of things—men, containers of resources, trucks, and even the local wildlife—which abruptly jets off into the air and off to the headquarters of Snake's military organization. The Fulton system success rate is effected by the real-time weather system, so resources and captured guards can go missing in a dust storm, for example."

The Phantom Pain focuses heavily on the Mother Base which can be customised by players and can also be attacked. Demos shown to journalists at E3 haven't revealed how bases can be defended but Bell finished by commenting, "[the demo] gave me the impression that Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is the most dynamic game in the series yet."

You can find out more about Mother Bases and the Fulton system here. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain does not currently have a release date but is expected on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One at some point between October this year and December 2015.

The game's E3 trailer can be viewed here.
