Diablo 3: Surprising Game Mechanics You Didn’t Know About

May 27, 2014 by Ian Miles Cheong

Here are a few things you didn’t know about Diablo 3 that could save your life in Hardcore mode.

The Hardcore community in DIablo 3 is without a doubt made up of the most proficient and skilled players of the game. Hardcore characters have only one life to live, so it’s in the best interest of hardcore players to hone their skills to ensure they stay alive, or else they risk losing it all and having to start anew.

It’s no fun to lose a character with 150 hours on it, needless to say.

Here are some of the things that the hardcore community has discovered about the game, which most players don’t know about. The list itself was compiled by stuck-in-the-matrix on reddit’s Diablo community.

  • Mammoth Hydra procs the Electrified Elite affix like CRAZY. I'm talking bug-level crazy. This problem is severely exacerbated if you use the Serpent's Sparker. Can mean sudden death for melee classes.

  • Illusory Boots can clip you inside Elites (and Rift Guardians) and cause you to take 100000% more Electrified damage compared to wearing normal boots and not clipping inside them.

  • The Rift Guardian Raziel generates insane amount of Electrified against certain skills/items (Serpent's Sparker being one of them) when low on health. I've only had both Unstable Anomaly and the Firebird set bonus proc against Raziel. And it has happened twice now. Watch out! Video

  • Don't cast Slow Time against the Rift Guardian Eskandiel. It will cause his attack (which also stuns) to travel trough you extremely slowly and usually ends up killing you (or at least proc your passive). Video

  • The Rift Guardian Infernal Maiden does insane amount of damage with her whirling+mortar attack. Don't get cornered by this Rift Guardian.

  • Homing Pads only protects your Town Portal cast against mobs damaging you. Any CC (even slight Knockbacks) will cancel the Town Portal cast. Of course it makes perfect sense, but it surprised me when I needed it the most (in a PK rift game).

  • Speed Pylons will cancel Illusory Boots' ability to walk through walls that the Waller elite affix creates, through the entire duration of the Pylon. This could possible affect other skills/items that normally allow you to traverse through the Waller affix.

  • Bottomless Potion of Kulle-Aid will not allow you break through walls created by the Waller elite affix when you are at full health.
