Epic Co-developing Free-to-Play Unreal Tournament with Community

May 8, 2014 by Yesika Reyes

It will be developed using Unreal Engine 4.

According to a report by IGN, Epic games will be co-developing a new Unreal Tournament witjh the Unreal Engine 4 development community for Microsoft Windows, OS X, and Linux platforms.

While it was revelead that the game will be free, the studio's VP Mark Rein clarified that the game won't be free-to-play, but simply "free." This could mean that there will be an absence of microtransactions and other annoying elements in an FTP structure.

The development will be crowdsourced and fan-created mods will play an integral role in the game's life post-launch. One of Epic's plans is to have a marketplace where players can share or sell their custome content. The studio will be taking a cut from the sales as a way to make up for making the game free.

"We see this as an ongoing project with no end date," project lead Steve Polge told IGN. "Unreal Tournament will be the base both for the continued evolution of the competitive FPS, and as a great way to enable aspiring developers to realize their visions for this kind of game."
