Ubisoft has revealed an interesting new transmedia project to supplement Ubisoft ‘s upcoming Assassin’s Creed Unity game. Introducing the Abstergo Industries Employee Handbook.
So, spin-off books and comics are not really new for video games, but this has been made in a slightly different vein. The book has been written in such a way as if it were an actual handbook in the fictional Assassin’s Creed world.
Abstergo is itself a fictional corporation, secretly founded and funded by the Templars. Part of their work involves investigating the history of the Assassins and Templars throughout time. Given this point of view, the book is a perfect way to define both the realms of the Assassins and Templars.
The book has presumably been designed with authenticity to its video game counterpart in mind. So, players will see the same familiar schematics, artifacts, and other tropes.
The book has been written by Christie Golden, who’s had a prolific career making novelizations of movies and TV shows aside from her original work. Her licensed work includes Star Wars, Star Trek, Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel, Invasion America, and World of Warcraft.
The Abstergo Industries Employee Handbook promises to be lavishly illustrated, and will presumably fill out the canon with facts vetted by Ubisoft’s writers. You can expect to get your own copy this November 4. If Unity comes out as scheduled, it’ll be a few months after the game’s release, but it will help fill out story details from all the Assassin’s Creed games.
