Square Enix is all smiles regarding Final Fantasy 14 A Realm Reborn, as it would seem they have picked up another half million subscribers in the past six months.
We are basing this stat from their recent announcement that they now have 2 million subscribers. This means each one of those two million made a payment of at least $ 29.99 to buy the game proper. This is the price of the game in the US for PS3 and PC. Now, consider that prices in other regions match or are higher than that, and the PS4 version itself retails for $ 39.99.
Of course, this metric comes with some qualifications as well. For example, that number does not account for active monthly subscribers. It also does not account for whether how many of those subscribers are active. Of course, there’s also the case of overlap between Playstation 3 owners who paid a nominal fee to upgrade to the Playstation 4 version.
Taking all of that into account, however, Square still comes out ahead, as A Realm Reborn finally meets expectations of what an online Final Fantasy should be making, and swings them towards the profitable end. It’s also vindication for their move into online, although one would imagine Square will be take a studied, careful approach to repeating such a venture for next time.
