Speaking to Canadian website The Grid last week, Ubisoft Toronto president Jade Raymond may have revealed that the setting for Assassin's Creed Comet is ancient Rome.
Raymond attributed the success of the series to allowing players to take on the role of "a badass assassin".
"But then there is an additional element of getting to relive and play a role in these pivotal moments in history," she added. "We work with historians to recreate these societies — ancient Rome, the French Revolution. And because each game is crafted in a new era, players don’t get tired of the it."
The French Revolution is the setting of Assassin's Creed Unity, the recently announced PC, PS4, and Xbox One game, and it's believed that Comet is heading to PS3 and Xbox 360 but Ubisoft has yet to reveal details of the game or even confirm that it is in development which is what makes Raymond's comment so interesting.
Assassin's Creed 2 and Brotherhood both featured Rome during the Renaissance but the specific mention of 'ancient' Rome may suggest an entirely different period.
If the game is set during the closing days of the Roman Republic and the foundation of the empire, the Comet title may refer to Caesar's Comet, which was said to appear following his assassination in the senate.
A 2011 Ubisoft survey asked fans if they would be interested in an Assassin's Creed title set during "the rise of Caesar's Empire in Ancient Rome".
The "badass assassin" could be a reference to Marcus Junius Brutus, whose armour could be unlocked in Brotherhood.
