Bungie has revealed new information on the customization options for upcoming open world shooter Destiny in the last GDC. We’re sharing some insights for you below.
So, the system Bungie has set up for Destiny’s customization will allow them to keep adding content for the game for the duration of its natural lifetime. Each class will also have a gear slot specific only to them. The Hunters have their cloaks, the Titans have their patchs, and the Warlocks have their armbands, known in the game as bonds. Bungie also showed off MashUp, the program they had been using to create character designs.
The variety in how Hunters will be very, very wide, and you can expect the same to be true of the other classes. Likewise, Destiny’s dynamic game world also displays a lot of verisimilitude in their video previews.
Bungie has also shared more details in Q&As with fans online. Nothing about a Beta or Collector’s Edition, save a confirmation that a Collector’s Edition will be available, but if you’re waiting on this one, you’ll want to hear what they did share. We sift through the answers to fans for some tangible information below.
When Bungie was asked about hiring NPCs as mercenaries, they replied that there will be NPCs to interact with, but emphasized cooperative multiplayer with fellow Guardians, AKA other online players. So, you could think of this game as Monster Hunter with guns.
Regarding preset loadouts, Bungie replies that their system works a bit differently than that. Your Guardian will stick with you throughout the game, and improve as a character as you play more and learn to do it better.
Here’s something good to know and easy to share: no matter what class you choose, you can use any gun in the game. Given we have apparently been seen only a small fraction of the guns available, this is welcome news indeed.
Raids will apparently be very difficult, pitched as aspirational goals. Bungie described it as merciless, so that should give you some idea how hard those will be.
The game will not really have a crafting system. At least, you won’t do the crafting. Among the loot you collect will be raw materials that can be used to make items and clothing for you. Now, Bungie gets silly here, referring to your possible items as ‘pre-destined’. It seems to boil down to a lack of creation tools on that end, but still some customization will be present.
Finally, regarding changing clothing and items, the game will apparently allow you to carry a large inventory. Subsequently, you will be able to freely pick out items and clothing from your inventory and change on the fly. You will also be able to check out other character’s builds to help drive your choices.
