Castlevania Producer Koji Igarashi Exits Konami

March 17, 2014 by Stephen Daly

Igarashi left for "the freedom to make the kind of games I really want to make."

Koji Igarashi, a veteran producer of the Castlevania series for over 20 years, left Konami this weekend.

In a statement to Polygon, Igarashi explained he had departed in order to set up his own small development studio.

"I've decided to break out on my own to have the freedom to make the kind of games I really want to make — the same kind I think fans of my past games want as well.

"Leaving Konami was a big decision, and not one I took lightly — I've spent my entire career there, made many friends, and had a lot of great opportunities — but I hope all the gamers and fans who have supported me in the past will join me in being excited about what comes next. Wish me luck!"

Igarashi served as producer on over a dozen Castlevania games beginning as assistant director and programmer on Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. He was credited with moving the series towards the 2D Metroidvania that defined the series between 1997 and 2010 when Spanish developer Mercury Steam took over creative control of the franchise.

Joining Konami in 1990, Igarashi also worked on Detana!! Twinbee, Tokemeki Memorial, Nano Breaker, Otomedius Excellent, and Kinect game Leedmees.
