Warner Bros. Interactive has revealed the release of a new reboot of Gauntlet, one year short of its 30 year anniversary.
Much like the original Gauntlet, this reboot will feature as much as four players going through several dungeons, taking down armies and powerful bosses and seeking out treasure. However, this is Gauntlet’s first digital-only release, and keeping up with the times, the game offers online multiplayer, as well as procedurally generated dungeons.
The game launches on Steam for PC, and will be fully compatible with Steam OS and Steam Machines. This game’s release also launches WB Games Vault, which will continue to feature direct-to-digital releases of classic games in Warner and Midway’s library.
Like it or not, developer Arrowhead Game Studios has rebooted Gauntlet’s look for the 2md (arguably 3rd) time, following the original 1985 – 1991 run, and the late 90s’ look of Gauntlet Legends and Dark Legacy. For what it’s worth, I do agree that Arrowhead has done their best retaining the spirit of the franchise, at least based on what they’ve shared so far.
Still, I find myself less than enthused by the Steam exclusive release. Hopefully, Warner can bring this to more platforms in the near future. For now, though, hardcore Steam fans can look forward to the new game this summer. Check out the announcement trailer below.
