Dark Souls 2 will be out soon, and with its impending release, the game’s creators at From Software have published a video, titled “Dark Intentions” providing an in-depth look into their creative process and the themes found within the game.
According to its maker and director, Yui Tanimura, the keyword of the game’s story is “cursed.” He said, “One day, a dark ring, which is a symbol of the curse, appears on the player’s body. In order to cure the curse, the player arrives in this world. He comes not only to cure his own curse, but also to fight a much larger curse.”
“So, the theme of the story is that of the larger fight against the curse.”
“Firstly, it is a sequel. I wanted to include as many elements and concepts of the Dark Souls franchise as possible. That was my biggest concern,” continued Tanimura-san.
“There are two main elements,” he said. “One is a sense of accomplishment. In Dark Souls, the sense of accomplishment in overcoming difficulties is the most important aspect of the game. Second is the loose connection that players feel with other players. That is a unique aspect of the game that allows players to share joy or difficulty.”
“To develop these elements was my foremost concern when creating this game.”
The video also contains an interview with voice actor Peter Serafinowicz, who says that Dark Souls is the best game he’s ever played.
