Xbox One Media Remote Releasing in March

February 20, 2014 by Stephen Daly

The remote will cost $25 and offers an alternative to Kinect and SmartGlass.

On the Xbox Wire, Microsoft has today announced a media remote for the Xbox One which you can see pictured above and will go on sale worldwide in March for $24.99.

The remote allows users to control video playback on Blu-ray movies and streaming video and features dedicated OneGuide and Back buttons. Described as "simple, yet powerful" the Media Remote can also control your TV's power settings and volume through the Kinect sensor.

One interesting feature is the background lights, which automatically turn on as soon as you pick up the remote.

Microsoft has heavily marketed the Xbox One as an entertainment centre and the Media Remote makes sense for those who've had less than a perfect experience with Kinect and SmartGlass. At the very least, the remote should offer a better experience than using the controller for watching movies.

The PS3 had a Blu-ray remote and hopefully Sony will release something similar for the PS4 as well.

European pricing for the Media Remote has not yet been announced.
