Ubisoft E3 2011 Presentation Talking Points

June 6, 2011 by Ian Miles Cheong

Ubisoft was the next studio to make a big E3 presentation, with a good number of big games and one surprise announcement.

ac revelations

Rayman Origins

Michel Ancel demoed Rayman Origins, a cooperative four-player platform game. He called it a "very important project" and way for him to revive his love of gaming. The demonstration shows players how we can relive our nostalgia for old games on a new console.

Ancel and a co-player demoed a few of the game's levels, one of which paid tribute to Tetris. Other levels included an underwater level, and a sky pirate level that plays much like a side-scrolling shooter.

Driv3r

Aaron "Mr. Caffeine" Priceman, whose attempt at humor became the subject of mockery on Twitter, presented Ubisoft's latest racing game, Driver: San Francisco. The footage was done with entirely in-game graphics rather than CGI. Yes, this is a game with cars in it.

Far Cry 3

Ubisoft then followed up the presser with one of the scariest trailers of E3. Taking place on an island, Far Cry 3's demo showed off one of the most brutal locations to ever make their way into a videogame. The game's protagonist, Jason Brody, may not be Lara Croft for torture porn, but it certainly comes close.

Brothers in Arms: Furious Four

Randy Pitchford was next on the stage to present an Inglourious Basterds themed shooter called Furious Four. The game is an over-the-top revisit of World War 2. While no gameplay footage was shown, the CGI trailer for the game was certainly reminiscent of Team Fortress 2 and the Quentin Tarantino film.

Tin Tin

Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg presented Tin Tin next. The presentation itself threatened to look like "A Conversation with Spielberg: The Game" until actual gameplay footage was shown. Based on the upcoming animated film, the game looks a bit like Shadow Complex for the whole family.

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier

Ubisoft showed off a live demo of their upcoming futuristic third person shooter, which begins with a stealth attack on a militant compound in a Nigerian swamp. Ubisoft revealed that four live players were in control of each of the game's four characters.

Future Soldier is definitely a different kind of game than Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3. With an intuitive team coordination system and a weapon designer called Gunsmith, Future Soldier is destined to stand out amidst the sea of shooters.

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Online

The next game to be presented was the free online shooter, Ghost Recon Online. Designed to compliment Future Soldier, this online shooter was designed by Ubisoft Singapore.

Trackmania 2

Ubisoft next presented Trackmania 2, exclusive for the PC. "Words like bliss, thrill, joy, and beauty are not often associated with racing games," said the announcer on stage. Like its predecessor, Trackmania 2 will allow players to construct and share their own racing tracks on the new Maniaplanet online service.

Raving Rabbids: Alive and Kicking

Presented by lead designer Antoine Henry, Frenchman with an amazing beard, a new Rabbids 2-4 player party game for the Kinect showed off some augmented reality features thanks to the Kinect. It's one of the most innovative looking games for the device, allowing players to stomp on Rabbids or participate in a game of 3D Twister.

Rocksmith

Due to the fact that someone forgot to tell Ubisoft that guitar games are dead, they announced the existence of Rocksmith, a game that teaches players how to play the guitar on the Xbox 360 and PS3 with a proper guitar instrument.

"Rocksmith: Surprise the hell out of her." I don't even know, Ubisoft.

Yourshape: Fitness Evolved

Ubisoft has also announced its plans to join in the fitness craze with Yourshape, an exercise game that tells you to "turn. on. the. fun."

Assassin's Creed: Revelations

The next big announcement was for Assassin's Creed: Revelations, the fourth game in the main Assassin's Creed franchise. The game takes place after the events of Brotherhood, as Ezio makes his way east to Constantinople. The game concludes Ezio's trilogy.

The live demo depicts Ezio Auditore, now draped in a black and grey outfit, fighting his way through a port somewhere in the Mediterranean. Ezio kills dudes, walks slow, and is his usual badass self. At one point, Ezio arms a Greek Fire cannon and burns down the entire dock. Ezio can now use a hookblade to grapple onto ropes and may a quick exit. He is accompanied by Brotherhood members throughout. The demo ended with a clip of a portal embedded within a standing henge.
