Final Fantasy 14 and ‘Strong’ Console Sales Boost Square Enix

February 5, 2014 by Stephen Daly

Square Enix back in black thanks to rebooted MMO.

Square Enix has announced in its financial report for nine months ending December 31st that it expects to make a profit of six billion yen or around $58 million on the back of Final Fantasy 14's relaunch and "strong" North American console game sales during the current fiscal year ending March 31st.

Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn was released in August, 2013 for PC and PS3 and Square Enix says sales and operations of the game "have been making favourable progress".

Sales for the nine month period amounted to 102.5 billion yen, a slight fall year-on-year, and yielded a profit of 5.2 billion yen compared to a loss of 5.7 billion yen last year.

Square Enix's loses for the previous fiscal year were pinned at 13.7 billion yen or $135 million.

In November, the company said Final Fantasy 14 was performing better than expected. The game, which requires a $12.99 monthly fee after the initial 30 day free trial, is set for release on PS4 in April.

Despite last year's "extraordinary loss" Square Enix is currently developing numerous large scale projects including new Tomb Raider, Hitman, and Deus Ex games.

Thief, Drakengard 3, Final Fantasy 15, and Kingdom Hearts 3 are all also on the way from the company. Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13 launches next week.
