When Sony announced that the new Vita model would be switching from an OLED to LCD display, potential buyers were skeptical. The previously used screen had been touted as one of the major selling points of the device, so why downgrade to a lesser-quality option?
When speaking with VG247, UK managing director Fergal Gara argued that there’s barely a difference between the two screens due to the strides LCD technology has taken.
“When we introduced Vita with the OLED screen that was considered – and it was – the pinnacle of screen technology. It was a beautiful screen and LCD at the time would have felt like a compromise,” he explained. “What’s happened in the interim is LCD screen technology has improved significantly. Whilst some think there’s a subtle difference between the two, we think it’s relatively imperceptible.
“More importantly with the LCD technology we’re able to deliver on the couple of advantages, specifically the weight and thickness advantages.”
Stock is almost sold out for the old Vita, so if you’re still not convinced that the newer model will be of a high enough quality, now’s the time to act.
