Sales of DLC rose by 41 per cent during the month of November thanks to the release the PS4 and Xbox One.
Research carried out by SuperData and reported by the [a]list Daily shows the surge caused by the new consoles while also noting that digital games sales increaded by 25 per cent year-on-year to now stand at more than $1 billion.
SuperData's analysis concluded that the PS4 and Xbox One prompted many consumers to adopt to more digitally-focused game buying.
"Several big franchises released on the same day as the next gen consoles. In particular Call of Duty: Ghosts, which generally launches two months later, was now immediately available via digital download on Xbox Marketplace and PSN. Similarly, Need for Speed Rivals and the late-October release of Assassin's Creed: Black Flag and Battlefield 4 drove overall sales. We expect this trend to continue for the remainder of the year."
The 41 per cent rise in DLC saw sales rise to $325 million for the month. Free-to-play MMOs fell by 17 per cent while social and mobile gaming increased by just a few percentage points.
The new consoles have performed well so far with 2.1 million PlayStation 4s and two million Xbox Ones sold according to the latest figures released by Sony and Microsoft.
