Creator of Fake Fallout 4 Website Explains His Prank

December 9, 2013 by Josiah Renaudin

The story behind the fake Fallout 4 website has finally come out.

No, that Fallout 4 teaser website, titled thesurvivor2299.com, was not real. It was detailed, creative, and even mostly believable, but the creator of the entire hoax has come out to say that the project has no ties to Bethesda or its post-apocalyptic franchise. The man responsible for the campaign was forced to end the fun early once Bethesda issued him a serious warning, so he’s now taken to a Reddit AMA thread to answer all the world’s burning questions.

The anonymous user angered plenty of Fallout fans, but hey, he wasn’t trying to be a bad person. In a way, he was attempting to assist the dedicated community.

"Some men just want to watch the world burn," he wrote under the username DCHoaxer. "I wanted to force Bethesda to reveal something during VGX on 12/11, and bring /r/Fallout community together (for at least 3 weeks). Unfortunately, this plan failed."

Bethesda stopped him before the whole thing got too ridiculous, but there was an actual CGI trailer in the plans. The mysterious user put quite a bit of money into both its creation and the hoax as a whole.

“Hosting: $30, Traffic (15TB) $60 Phone number: Approximately $900,” he estimated."That's nothing for me. I know I'm a douche.

"I'm one of these 'selfish bastards with a lot of money' so I wanted to release a CGI Trailer. But Pete [Hines, VP of Bethesda Softworks] killed my plans. Maybe I'll release it later along with the script, so somebody else can use it!"

It was fun while it lasted. Hopefully, we’ll hear more about the actual Fallout 4 before too long.
