Next-generation consoles have arrived, and while it’s difficult to determine either’s success from the very limited sales numbers that have been gathered, launch information out of the UK gives Sony the clear early lead over Microsoft.
According to MCV, the PS4 has become the fastest selling console in UK history with 250,000 units sold and about £90 million generated during its opening weekend. This breaks the previous UK record of 185,000 PSP units sold in its three days of availability, and blows by the Xbox One’s pace of 150,000 boxes pushed in about 48 hours.
Numbers from other European territories should be trickling down in the coming days. The PS4 sold 1 million units in a single day in North America, while the Xbox One did similar numbers when it hit multiple territories Nov. 22. Black Friday figures, as well as those during the lead up to Christmas, should also paint an interesting picture for the viability of these machines.
