The Xbox One will not be able to play games without the day one patch according to a new interview with Microsoft's senior director of product management Albert Penello.
"Functionally, you will be able to do very little without taking the day one update," he told Engadget. Asked what exactly you can do without the patch he said:
"Nothing. You need the day one update. A lot of the apps come with the day one update because they wouldn't have even been done. You're gonna need to take this update. It's not gonna be really an optional thing."
Many of Microsoft's original plans for the Xbox One have been eliminated as a result of uproar over their initial plans for daily internet checks and restrictions on used games.
The day one patch for the Xbox One allows the console to be used without ever needing to connect to the internet again.
Sony has previously detailed the 300mb day one patch for the PlayStation 4 which adds a host of features including DVD and Blu-ray playback and remote play functionality. However, users who choose not to download the patch will still be able to play games on PS4.
Microsoft will launch the Xbox One on November 22nd but rumours continue to circulate that the company may spin-off its Xbox division.
