Sony has announced that sales of the PlayStation 3 have reached 80 million as of November 2nd.
This follows news from Microsoft in October that the Xbox 360 had also hit the 80 million threshold and comes despite the fact that the PS3 was released a year after the Xbox 360 and almost 18 months later in Europe.
The PlayStation 3 was released in Japan on November 11th 2006 while the Xbox 360 debuted November 22nd 2005.
Sony emphasised the strong third party support for the console revealing that 4,332 non-digital titles have been released on PS3 to date.
The total number of combined Blu-ray disc and downloadable games set to be launched on PS3 between November 1st and December 31st this year is 300.
Some impressive figures were also revealed for the PlayStation Network – it now has 150 million registered accounts as of September 19th, 2013. There are 220,000 "digital content options" on the PlayStation Store, of which 72,000 are game content.
The Wii remains the best selling console of its generation with over 100 million units sold. As for the future, Sony expects to sell five million PS4s by March 31st, 2014.
