Konami’s UK blog has finally lifted the heavy veil covering Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes. In this post we will get into the story as explained by Konami, and how Ground Zeroes relates to The Phantom Pain.
It may be best to think of MGS 5 like Kill Bill. Originally conceived as one whole, the creators made practical considerations and decided to split it in two. Of course, this means Kojima has technically been working on two Metal Gear Solid games at the same time. Consider that he’s making these games for both 7th and 8th generation consoles and you’ll understand the true extent of this project’s ambition.
The story follows Big Boss in the 1960s as he infiltrates a remote Cuban prison camp called Camp Omega on a rescue mission. These hostages know key information about Snake and his private military organization (at this point said organization is Militaires Sans Frontieres), which he and ally Kazuhira Miller needs to keep top secret. The actions they take in this mission will lead towards the creation of The Phantom Pain.
As series creator Hideo Kojima puts it, “The advanced capabilities of the FOX Engine are allowing me to express the story of Metal Gear Solid in a new way.” Phantom Pain is apparently an even more dramatic break from the series’ conventions, that Kojima has planned Ground Zeroes to introduce loyal fans to the new gaming elements.
Kojima has actually been brutally honest about how he keeps shaking up the game design throughout development, so whatever final form Phantom Pain takes, even the people at Kojima Productions may not know yet. For now, we have the transition title, the game that he hopes will win us over, Ground Zeroes.
Ground Zeroes will be released Spring 2014 on Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Xbox One and Xbox 360.
