Pokemon X and Y: Catch Shinies By Fishing! A Basic Guide

November 3, 2013 by Ryan Parreno

We shared how to catch them on land, now learn how to get those coveted Shinies from the waters.

Youtuber, cosplayer and internet personality NintendoFanGirl has made a nice basic guide for Pokemon X & Y, explaining how to catch Shiny Pokemon using the Fishing Method. Interested? Let’s jump right to it.

You will need a lot of Ultra Balls and Dive Balls. You also need to have an Inkay or Octillery with the ability Suction Cup. Although it’s not necessary, it’s preferable that your Inkay or Octillery be somewhere between levels 35-40. This Pokemon is to be first in line. Lastly, make sure you have talked to the fisherman inside the house in Route 16. He will talk to you about chanting.

Look for an area in the ocean where there are a lot of rocks. You are not leaving this spot for a little while, so get comfy. Cast your line and reel in any time the exclamation points pop up. Any time you come across a nonshiny, choose run before a battle starts, cast your line in the same spot again, and start over.

When you run into nonshinies in this way, you start to form a chain. The more nonshinies you run across in this way, the bigger the chain gets, and the bigger the chain, the higher the chances you find a Shiny Pokemon. Remember: if you miss reeling in even just one Pokemon, or move from your spot even just a little bit, the chain resets and you have to start over.

You can run across a shiny by the time you form a 40 + chain, although it may take as much a 100+ chain. Either way, if you keep at the grind you will eventually get that Shiny. You can confirm how high a chain you reached later if you go back to Route 16 and talk to the fisherman again.
