PlayStation posted an "ultimate" and comprehensive FAQ on their blog today. It was revealed that cross platform play between PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 is technically possible. Users can also request a Blu-ray activation disc if they don't want to ever go online. In addition, external hard drives will not be supported by the PS4.
Can PS4 and PS3 users play together online, cross platform?
The functionality is technically possible and some developers may choose to support it for their titles.
What if I’m not able to or don’t want to connect my PS4 system online?
PS4 owners in North America can contact SCEA Consumer Services at (800) 345-7669 to request a Blu-ray activation disc that will be distributed via mail.
Will users be able to connect an external hard drive to expand storage on PS4?
No, this feature is not supported on PS4.
It was generally know that players on current generation consoles cannot play online with their friends on the next-generation platforms because they operate on the same servers. While this may be exciting news if you have friends who won't be getting a new console soon, it is still up to the discretion of the developer.
Another great feature is the ability to use your PS4 without ever connecting to the internet. Owners can request SCEA for an activation disc to be sent via mail. This is definitely helpful for people who live in countries with slow or limited internet services. Even if some devices only require one-time activation, some users don't even have the chance to connect to internet at all.
It was also possible to connect external drives to the PS3 to expand storage capabilities. Unfortunately, this won't be possible on the PS4.
These are just some of the notable information revelead on the FAQ, but please check PlayStation's blog to see the complete list. Earlier this month, Sony posted a FAQ that focused on how sharing worked on the PS4. In addition, the DualShock 4 controller appears to be compatible with current generation and rival platforms as well.
