Indie developers continue to flock to Sony and the PlayStation 4 for a multitude of reasons. Ease of development, a friendly team, the correct resources – we’ve heard plenty of stories from smaller creators about why they chose Sony, but the man behind the Oddworld series, Lorne Lanning, argues that this is the best development environment he’s ever been a part of. The industry veteran is thrilled to be working with a reinvigorated Sony, and gives a great deal of the credit to lead architect Mark Cerny.
“Simply put, it’s the smartest development environment that we’ve ever seen,” Lanning told IGN in a recent interview. “I believe a lot of that credit goes to chief hardware architect, Mark Cerny, who has an incredible depth of knowledge and long-time experience in developing games. Mark has serious knowledge – and I mean down to the machine language.
“If you take his decades of development experience in delivering hits, and then build a custom tailored development environment that’s designed to facilitate developer needs… then I think that’s the system you’re looking at.”
Lanning is quite the outspoken developer, recently claiming that he’s working on something that will be more traumatic than the torture scene from Grand Theft Auto 5. However, he doesn’t just make statements to hear himself talk. Lanning has been a member of the industry for many years, so his high praise of the PlayStation 4 team is good news for anyone looking to build next-gen projects with Sony.
