Nintendo is to stop producing the Wii console in Japan shortly according to the company's regional website.
The revelation that the console, which has sold over 100 million units, will no longer be made in Nintendo's home territory was spotted by Japanese translator Cheesemeister.
In a statement to Eurogamer Nintendo commented:
"Yes, NCL did update their website on 29th August with a small notice to state that Wii hardware production will stop in the near future.
"This specific message was referring to the Japanese market. No specific time frame has been stated yet. We have made no specific announcements for Europe regarding Wii production."
The Wii was launched in November 2006 while its successor, the Wii U, was released in November 2012. Despite the success of the Wii, the Wii U has struggled gain traction in the market with Nintendo UK admitted last week that many consumers don't know that the device is in fact a new console.
In the second quarter of the year, the Wii U sold just 160,000 units worldwide.
