Back on the Nintendo 64 platform, there were plenty of great video game titles that gamers can look back fondly on. For instance, for Pokemon fans, we’ve seen plenty of Pokemon titles, even if there wasn’t a full RPG experience that we’re used to playing. One of those spin-off titles, Pokemon Snap, was a massive hit and it became a quick seller. However, since the days of the Nintendo 64, we haven’t seen a revival of the game despite plenty of gamers hoping a sequel would come out sooner than later. In a recent interview piece conducted by Metro, we got a look behind the reason there has yet to be a Pokemon Snap 2.
Metro spoke to the producer behind the upcoming Pokemon Sword and Shield titles, Junichi Masuda along with the director Shigeru Ohmori. While the interview piece was mainly about the upcoming titles, the interviewer did ask about the potential of Pokemon Snap 2. It’s been years and there has been plenty of hardware released that would have likely made for some interesting concepts for the game such as the Nintendo Wii motion controls, the Wii U GamePad to even the Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons.
While the duo didn’t give a direct response behind the matter of the upcoming installment, Junichi Masuda did state that they couldn’t just do a new installment with the same mechanics. Instead, there would need to be a unique twist.
“All I can say is that I don’t think we can just make the same thing again. So we’d have to come up with a very unique twist on this if we do make another one.”
For now, it seems that the developers are not actively pursuing a sequel to Pokemon Snap. However, perhaps when a new idea comes up, the development team will finally make use out of the new tech that would allow players to mimic taking pictures of Pokemon out in the wild.
