The Sega Genesis had a few big beat ‘em up titles, but one of the biggest franchises from the era is hands down Streets of Rage. The video game was developed under Sega and it received three installments. After 1994, the franchise laid dormant and fans have been asking for a new release for decades. Fans even went as far as to release their own remakes but until recently, Sega refused to go back and give the franchise a chance in today’s generation of platforms.
Streets of Rage 4 is coming and as a fan of the original series years ago, I couldn’t be more thrilled. Developers LizardCube and Guard Crush Games are handling the game which their offering a slightly different aesthetic feel. However, this is still looking like the classic side-scrolling beat ‘em up a title which we can’t wait to get our hands on hopefully sometime this year. Since its announcement, we haven’t got any word in regards to what the narrative storyline will be about. All that we know so far is that the game will take place a decade after the events of Streets of Rage 3. Likewise, we know that both Axel Stone and Blaze Fielding will be present in the game.
Only two trailers have been released for the game so far which we’ll include the latest above and the former announcement trailer below. For the most part, this new footage shows off the combat aspect of the upcoming title but doesn’t offer any word on if we’ll see any additional protagonist characters return from the previous games.
With Sega bringing back Streets of Rage and their success with Sonic Mania, we’re curious as to if we ’ll see any other former classics get a revival from the Sega Genesis era.
