Microsoft's Phil Spencer has pointed to the Xbox One's all-in-one nature as a key distinguisher in the price of the console compared to the PS4.
At E3 this year Microsoft announced that Xbox One would cost €499/$499/£429 while Sony revealed the PS4 will debut for €399/$399/£349 – both consoles are launching this November. In an attempt to make up the difference Xbox One Day One edition consoles in Europe will include a free digital copy of FIFA 14.
Speaking to Eurogamer Spencer said, "Price is important. There's no doubt about that, especially in today's economy."
At gamescom Sony announced it had received more than one million pre-orders for PlayStation 4 but Spencer declined to reveal the Xbox One's numbers.
"What we're seeing in the pre-order numbers is the overall value of what they get in Xbox One," he added. "I feel really good about how things are trending."
Spencer commented that the broad capabilities of the Xbox One will show people its value.
"People see a box that has the gaming stuff, a great lineup of games, and a commitment from us that great games will continue to come.
"And then Skype and communication, and the camera that's in the Kinect sensor that allows you to Skype and communicate with all of your friends wherever you go.
"It's interesting, when you think about all that Xbox One is capable of."
He went onto say that consumers will make whatever choice their wallet allows.
"People will make the right decision for their families. There's no doubt about that. And I'm not at all dismissive of the investment people have to make and what that means.
"I'll say our investment in them as a customer is a long-standing commitment that this box will be a great gaming, entertainment and communication box."
Amazon France has listed a PS4 bundle for €499 which includes Killzone Shadow Fall, a second controller and the PS4 camera which offers a saving of €80. Sony's Jack Tretton recently played down the console's price advantage.
