A day after approving 100 new titles into Steam Greenlight, Valve announces they are having a sale for 50 Steam Greenlight games, for as much as 75 % off.
In their official blog post, Valve cites improvements and lessons learned in the first year of Steam Greenlight, as well as talking about how the system was intended to be inclusive of more indie developers into the platform. They bring up the 580 titles now hosted on Steam, as well as the continuing submissions to Greenlight, at an average of four titles per day.
They also defer to Gabe Newell’s anniversary statement, who says that their ultimate goal is for there to be no bottlenecks in the way of developers and consumers. Gabe says that through Greenlight, they made a conscious effort to approve enough indie titles to match the number of titles Steam has in other categories.
To sum, Valve talks up their intention to continue on improving their backend process, as well as to improve how Steam users themselves experience the platform, and get to preview the games, since it colors how they choose their purchases.
We won’t be rounding up the titles or discounts here, but they include independent standouts and popular titles such as Organ Trail, Divekick, Papers, Please, Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams, Surgeon Simulator, and The Angry Nerd Videogame Adventures.
Honestly, Valve seemed to be attempting catch up to the bad PRSteam Greenlight has had for quite a while now in very short order. I admit I can’t say I am too impressed, but the effort is not unappreciated. Valve is not going to get by on sweet talk here. They will have to demonstrate their commitment to Greenlight and to indies in the months to come.
