The Last Guardian is still a game, and yes, it’s being made by real people. I know at this point, you’ll likely block that statement out and just assume Sony will continue to pull our collective leg until the PlayStation 5 rolls around, but Fumito Ueda, head of Team Ico at SCE's Japan Studio, is claiming this as the truth. However, that doesn’t mean you should expect to see the game today, tomorrow, or even next year, as the Japan studio has enough on its plate as is.
Speaking with Famitsu (via Polygon) about both his past and current projects, Ueda admitted that The Last Guardian is absolutely in the works – even if it isn’t the first software priority for the Japan team.
"It's under earnest development," Ueda said. "However, SCE Japan Studio, who's working on The Last Guardian, also has titles like Puppeteer and Knack, and those are only the ones currently announced. Those are taking priority right now."
Both Puppeteer and Knack will launch on their respective Sony platforms before the year is done, which could mean that more emphasis could be placed on Ueda’s tale of a boy and his friendly beast when 2014 begins. It’s a nice thought, at least, but when you have to update the public one or two times a year on the game’s existence, it can be a bit difficult to believe the thing will ever make it into our lives. For now, we’ll continue to hold out hope that the follow-up to the wonderful Shadow of the Colossus will see the finish line.
