Standing in stark contrast to Yatagarasu, Project Phoenix gets succesfully funded 221 %, with $ 221,614 raised of the $ 100,000 target in just a day after Kickstarting. At this rate, the project may reach the maximum $ 1,650,000 stretch goal yet.
If anything, though, Project Phoenix seems fated to be a success. The game boasts a star studded crew of developers and creatives comprising Creative Intelligence Arts, including no less than Nobuo Uematsu. Other people involved include Creative Intelligence Arts founder Hiroaki Yura (Diablo III, The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya), Vaughan Smith (LA Noire), Kiyoshi Arai (Final Fantasy series), Steffen Unger (Halo, Crysis) and Larry Oji (Overclocked Remix).
Now, Project Phoenix the game is actually a squad based real time strategy, which will boast of a lot of JRPG elements. You collect a four member party that will roam a fantasy world beset by ogres. You will not have to worry about micromanagement, as characters will act intelligently on their own. There will be a certain degree of leveling up and taught abilities, and customization, but you will spend as much or more time in exploration or combat. For now, the game is hitting Windows, Mac and Linux, both via Steam and on their site, as well as mobile devices.
The team at Creative Intelligence Arts has a vision of what RPGs can be in the next generation, and so wanted to pursue it in their free time. As such, nobody involved is getting any of the initial Kickstarter funding money. Everything is going to development of the game, with everyone instead getting paid a share of royalties after the game's release.
Perhaps due to the unique nature of the enterprise, the caliber of the people involved, and the great way they announced the game (a teaser site days before the Kickstarter launch, with the barest of info), Creative Intelligence Arts hit their base goal quite early. We will keep tabs on the progress of this campaign and get back to you on its final results.
