First announced last May and winning Destructoid's Best of Rhythm in the last E3, KickBeat now has an official release date. Expect it to come to both Playstation 3 and the Vita this September 3.
According to Sony, thanks to huge demand from fans, they went ahead with releasing the game on Playstation 3 as well as the Vita. Zen Studios has also added Cross Buy, so getting one copy for one platform automatically nets you a copy for both of them.
KickBeat is a music combat game that seeks to dispose of bars, arrows and other action signals including a high score. Lacking any form of interface or indicators, you get a completely unobscured view of the game itself. it's worth noting that the game originally did have these signals in an earlier build, as previewed a year ago.
Lacking signals, you react to your opponents in real time, in 3D. Pressing the button or touching the screen allows you to interact with the opponent. Thus far, the previews have only show attacks, but Zen is hinting on a deeper fighting system, so we may get blocks, parries and even counterattacks yet.
Now, the game will only have 18 tracks, but will also allow you to set your own tracks to the game a la Trackmania or Audiosurf. Zen Studios promises adding songs in for new levels will be easy and painless.
Not announced or possibly developed yet, but since it's coming to the Playstation 3, I think this game could use Dance Dance Revolution pad and/or Playstation Move support. To be honest, I'm skeptical that removing all the prompts will work out, but the game has been in development since 2009 and was conceived of as far back as 2006, so Zen must know what they're doing. Check out the trailer above to get a feel for the game's atmosphere and feel.
