UPDATE: A Sony spokesperson has confirmed to Joystiq that a Gran Turismo movie is "being made" but said the company has no further comment.
ORIGINAL STORY: Sony are planning to make a movie adaptation of PlayStation racer Gran Turismo with Fifty Shades of Gray producers Mike De Luca and Dana Brunetti reportedly signed up to take on the project.
According to The Wrap, Sony want to compete with 'fast car' franchises from Universal, Dreamworks and Legendary Pictures. Sony executives Elizabeth Cantillon, DeVon Franklin and Hannah Minghella will oversee the movie.
Universal's Fast & Furious series has become of that studios' biggest franchises and Dreamworks are currently adapting EA's Need for Speed, which stars Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul, in a bid to compete. Legendary meanwhile are said to be looking for Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and Simon Crane to direct 'Hot Wheels'.
The Gran Turismo franchise is one of Sony's most important having sold 70 million units to date worldwide. The next installment in the series, Gran Turismo 6, is set to be released for PS3 later this year although a PS4 version remains possible.
2013 marks the series' 15th anniversary.
Other movies currently in production based on Sony games are animated adaptations of Ratchet and Clank and Heavenly Sword.
