Toho Is Making Godzilla Console Video Games Again

April 17, 2025 by Ryan Parreno

The Big G is for Games.

Toho has the gaming news that you’ve been waiting years for.

As shared by fansite Godzilla-Movies, Toho has announced plans to jump back into making Godzilla console games. This news comes over a decade since the Monsterverse Godzilla movie released in 2014, prompting the start of the Reiwa era of Godzilla back in Japan.

Within this time, Godzilla has appeared in blockbuster and critically acclaimed movies, made in both the US and Japan. To be more specific, the past two years saw a particularly strong run with the release of Godzilla Minus One in 2023, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire in 2024.

Godzilla also made a surprising jump from the silver screen to comic shops. He made his debut in the pages of DC Comics with Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong launching in October 2023. And, five decades after his original run in Marvel, Godzilla is slated to return to Marvel comics in a five issue crossover event called Godzilla Destroys The Marvel Universe.

These moves are all part of a big push by Toho Co. to once again capitalize on Godzilla in a big way. The Bloomberg article reported that the company is planning to spend ¥ 120 billion, or $ 830 million, on Godzilla’s figurative conquest of the world.

Now, there is already a Toho Games label that’s making mobile games. As of this writing, they feature three games on their website: Run Godzilla, an absurd looking racing game between titans, Godzilla Destruction, an action/simulation game, and real time strategy Godzilla Battle Line.

And Godzilla has also been making appearances in other games, which includes not only Fortnite and Gigabash, but unlikely picks like Minecraft, Call of Duty, and Dave the Diver. But now, two years after Godzilla Voxel Wars, Toho is interested in putting the Big G back front and center into his own video game franchises.

Toho is certainly following Hasbro and Paramount in entering the world of console games. In between Hasbro’s GI Joe game, Paramount’s TMNT: The Last Ronin game, and now Godzilla console games, we seem to be entering a possible licensed game renaissance of sorts.

But we’re hopeful that the lesson Toho took from Godzilla Voxel Wars is that they could stand to be more ambitious in their video game plans. I believe I’m not the only one who’s hoping Toho goes back into the well and make new multiplayer brawlers like Godzilla Unleashed, but we can’t discount that they may have novel ideas for what to do with the Big G in 2025. We certainly want Toho to surprise us with something good, so let’s see what they have to announce next.
