Since new consoles are dropping sometime this fall, the expectation is that both Sony and Microsoft will drop the old hardware like it’s hot. Sony might have a better track record for post-launch support, but we usually don’t see new, exciting exclusives coming to last-generation technology while a more powerful box is beginning its lifecycle. However, SCE Japan understands that not everyone will purchase a PS4 early on, and because of that, the company wants to continue to provide innovative experiences for the significant install base.
“It’s important for us that we don’t just drop the console and leave it for dead just because we’ve made another one,” Gavin Moore, creative director of SCE Japan Studios, told PlayStation Lifestyle. “There are a lot of people that can’t afford a PlayStation 4 yet, or can’t even get their hands on one because Sony can only make so many. It’s important that we keep supporting those PlayStation fans, there’s something like 80 million PS3s – that’s a lot of fans out there that need games”
Puppeteer, the studio’s current project, is the perfect example of a truly creative experience coming to the PlayStation 3 right around the expected next-gen launch. It should be a treat for Sony fans sticking by their older hardware, and while it might not be a AAA blockbuster, it’s a game only SCE Japan could think up.
“As a developer, Naughty Dog’s mandate is to make AAA blockbusting Hollywood crushing titles, and it’s the same for Santa Monica – whereas our mandate at Japan Studios is to make games that nobody else can see on another console,” Moore continued. “So it’s kind of crazy in our studio because it’s a bunch of insane people coming up with strange ideas. We’re kind of left alone to come up with what we want.”
This blissfully charming adventure is just around the corner, as Puppeteer will hit the PS3 Sep.11 for a cool $39.99.
