In a discussion with VideoGamer.com, senior design director Simon Ffinch explained that a PS4 and Xbox One port of Rift will might happen after Trion Worlds sees "how those consoles develop."
When asked about the other MMORPGs heading to the console, like Final Fantasy 14, Ffinch said, "I'm not going to ever say anything definitively one way or the other on something that is that far in the future."
Before the launch of the new consoles, games like Blacklight Retribution, Planetside 2 and DC Universe Online, all will launch as free-to-play titles on the PS4. While previous the consoles didn't come with sufficient technology to allow free-to-play games to thrive, the new consoles will take consider even free games.
Last month Rift launched its free-to-play initiative and according to Ffinch, Rift saw a massive increase in users.
If more free-to-play titles launch on the new consoles, the biggest obstacle comes in the form of subscriptions and updates. The PS4 will require a subscription to play online, but free games won't require that subscription. As for the Xbox One, Microsoft did not reveal their plans.
More importantly, developers need to update their game promptly without paying to certify the updates or going through certification altogether. Microsoft recently dropped the update fee, but still employs a certification process.
