The Last of Us won’t just go down as another critical success that no one bothers to play. Not only is Naughty Dog’s violent drama the highest-rated game of 2013 thus far, but it also managed to become the "fastest selling new software title in PS3 history." Sony has come out to let the world know that The Last of Us sales hit 3.4 million units between the game's global release on June 14 and July 3.
Those are some impressive figures, surpassing what the Uncharted franchise managed to reach for the team previously. The numbers include both physical and digital copies sold, helping to push the game to become the "fastest selling new software title" in the PS3’s history. As you could guess, Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida was pretty excited about the news.
“These sales figures are a testament to the blockbuster quality of The Last of Us,” Yoshida said. "The teams at Naughty Dog are true visionaries and their storytelling capabilities are second to none, this title is an undisputed demonstration of that. SCE continues to be committed to delivering unique gameplay experiences that redefine the interactive entertainment industry and The Last of Us is a perfect example.”
The themes and character arcs may not resonate equally with all players, but there’s no doubt that Naughty Dog’s final PlayStation 3 game is worth your time. People respond to quality products, and thankfully, this hard-working studio is getting the credit it deserves from its fans.
