Kamiya on 20-Hour Length of The Wonderful 101, Bayonetta Appearing in Smash Bros.

June 18, 2013 by Josiah Renaudin

Platinum Games’ Hideki Kamiya always seems to have something interesting to say.

The Wii U needs some interesting software in order to increase consumer excitement. A new Mario or Zelda game would be great, but it will likely take more than the average cast of Nintendo characters to dig the Wii U out of its current hole. Platinum Games’ The Wonderful 101 looks to be one of the few third-party titles with enough buzz to drive console sales, and according to game director Hideki Kamiya, there will be plenty of content in the final product for players to enjoy.

The often outspoken Kamiya recently spoke to Nintendo World Report about anything and everything related to Platinum. The creative studio had two major games showing at E3, but The Wonderful 101 was the title that Kamiya seemed to be the most interested in discussing. He’s been quoted saying that the game will be on the short side before, yet Kamiya has seemingly changed his tune when it comes to the number of hours it takes to get through the game.

“In the case of Wonderful 101, we really try to pack a lot of different ideas into it, and it got a lot bigger than I thought. And in fact we estimate that a normal play session would be 20 hours,” he said. “Personally I think that I kept piling stuff on and I realized, ‘Wow, this is going to be a pretty big game.’ But that notwithstanding, replayability is a really important factor, it has to be sort of easy to play in the sense that you don't get tired of playing it, and you would be able to ultimately play it in a day.”

Bayonetta was discussed, but likely not in the way that you’d expect. Kamiya was asked if he would ever consider putting his star heroine in the upcoming Super Smash Bros. game, even though that decision isn’t up to him.

“So it's not something that I could comment on. In fact, you could probably ask Mr. Sakurai!” he said. “If Mr. Sakurai wanted to put her in the game it probably would happen and I'd be more than happy to!”

This isn’t exactly a “yes,” but who wouldn’t want to see Bayonetta shoot her way across the next Smash Bros. sequel?
