Killzone: Shadow Fall Devs Talk Polygons

June 17, 2013 by Jordan Erica Webber

Hear about the design of the world in which the game is set.

Sony and Guerrilla Games have released a 21-minute video for Killzone: Shadow Fall that includes both the demo of the gameplay we saw at the PS4 reveal event and commentary from various members of the team working on the game. If you just want to hear what the devs have to say, skip to 08:05 in the video below:

The commentary is mostly about the art of the game, but given what we've seen of the game so far, that's an interesting topic to learn about. For instance, the shiny, bright, metallic aesthetic of the city is the result of a desire to style a locale that wasn't as brown as in previous Killzone games. The city is supposed to be a futuristic utopia, but one that still maintains an element of realism. Particularly impressive are the dam that one of the devs reckons is two miles high, and the detailed commercial bots flying around.

We also learn that the Helghast that attacks the woman in the demo before approaching the player character is made up of 40,000 polygons. This is apparently an interesting character to model because it can cloak, and its apparel is covered in straps that flap around as it moves.

As for that explosion that splits the peaceful part of the demo from the combat sequence, that was apparently achieved by the team creating two game worlds: one pre-explosion, and one post-explosion. The explosion also provided an opportunity for the team to make use of the game's dynamic dust system, which layers dust on everything in the world including moving objects and characters.

It all looks very impressive so far. Is it good enough for the new generation?
