Yesterday we reported that, according to sources from within GameStop, it looked as if the Wii U Basic Set, which is the 8GB version that's intended as an entry-level option, might be getting the axe.
Initially, when asked to comment, Nintendo chose not to, but in the past few hours, they've had a change of tune. In a statement issued to Polygon, by Nintendo of America's senior director of Corporate Communications, Charlie Scibetta:
"There is a current misperception about Wii U hardware… To clarify: Nintendo is working with its retail partners to simply rebalance the stock of the White 8GB and the Black 32GB Wii U models in the market. Consumers looking for either model will continue to find them available."
So, this is good news for those who were planning on getting the Wii U at the lowest price possible, and have no problems with the meager sides hard drive.
Though it's also lessens the chance of there being a white Deluxe Set, which many assumed was the reason why the Basic Set was being dismissed in the first place. Which is bad news for quite a few out there. It, alongside an all white 3DS XL model is something diehard Nintendo fans want, but may never get unfortunately.
Furthermore, this also lessens the chance of a price drop of the 32GB model, unless the 8GB version also goes down in price. Which is a possibility; given the sluggish sales of the Wii U, perhaps a bargain basement price is what’s needed to generate excitement?
Guess we'll find out next week.
