Before Call of Duty and Medal of Honor popularized World War II-themed video games, there was id Software’s Wolfenstein. One of the original, purest representations of the now-unstoppable FPS genre, Wolfenstein 3D is now considered the "grandfather of 3D shooters," and plenty of reboots/sequels have been created in order to recapture that long-lost magic. The New Order, which is being developed by MachineGames and published by Bethesda, is the latest attempt at glory, and a slew of new pieces of concept art have been released in order to showcase the project’s unique style.
As you can see, this isn’t your average romp through the trenches of mid-1900’s history. Wolfenstein takes place during the ‘60s in an alternate history where the Nazis somehow won World War II. Since then, some new, futuristic technology has been introduced into the military ecosystem, and much of that firepower can be seen in the images provided.
There are plenty of good reasons to doubt the work being done by MachineGames, but according to the press release sent out for the game’s announcement, it sounds as if the team has plenty of respect for the storied franchise.
"As fans of the series, working on this game is an honor, and our team is driven to create an unforgettable action-adventure experience that will make FPS fans proud," said MachineGames' creative director Jens Matthias.
The initial trailer and screens look solid, but we’ll likely have to wait until this fall to learn if this cross-generational game has what it takes to wow the world once again.
